The ICU/SDU is a specialty care unit that's scope of care includes postoperative surgical and medical patients requiring advanced care services. Their primary diagnoses include cancer, peripheral vascular disease, urologic disorders, respiratory failure as well as cardiac disease and other medical illnesses. Must be comfortable covering ICU and Step-Down patients if the need arises.The incumbent for this position may be eligible to apply for the Education Debt Reduction Program
The RN demonstrates knowledge and competency in critical care nursing skills such as hemodynamic monitoring, early recognition of cardiac lethal dysrhythmias and effective treatment of life threatening cardiac complications. Must follow approved ICU/SDU protocols and works collaboratively with all members of the interdisciplinary ICU/SDU team. The RN must assess and monitor the patient closely in order to identify subtle changes in a patient's condition that warrant immediate intervention. Patients admitted tend to be medically unstable, requiring constant cardiac and respiratory monitoring and continual adjustment of treatments, such as the titration and dosing of multiple intravenous medications and changes in ventilatorary support. The RN must be able to interpret, integrate and respond to a wide array of clinical information. Because of the critical nature of patients' conditions, nurses working in these areas are often confronted with dealing with end-of-life issues and sometimes other ethical dilemmas related to withholding, withdrawing or medical futile care.
